Post
on Southern forum proposes Dixie's own press
by Connie Ward This is a message I posted on Yahoo's Dixie Perspective
Club. Judging by the responses, it's time for the South to give Big
Media the boot!
You've heard of citizen soldiers. How about citizen journalists? Who says you have to have a degree from Columbia School of Journalism to put out a newspaper? How many of you would contribute original news articles, commentary, opinion, and feature stories to a grassroots Southern online newspaper? I'm afraid there couldn't be any monetary payment for accepted submissions, but the author would certainly get a byline. Who knows, if it took off, maybe we could sell ads, and we would have enough to pay something to contributors. But at first, it would have to be a voluntary labor of love. My web-page making skills seem to be coming along okay, so I would be glad to build/edit it and get it up on the web. But I simply don't have the time (or the money) to call all over the South, interview people, and write everything myself. I envision a weekly newspaper -- a new issue each week that also gets updated every day (at least, every day that I receive a timely update). Emphasis would be on Southern nationalism and heritage preservation -- but I want more than that. Of course there would be an opinion page. I'd also like feature stories about subjects like living history events or what to grow in an old fashioned Southern garden; cultural events; heck, even politics. I would like to include things like profiles of South-friendly and South-unfriendly businesses (Alcoa just made that list), overtly proSouthern businesses, etc. I'd like to include continually updated info about all the organizations -- LOS, SCV, HPA, SP, SLRC, etc. Our Southern groups usually issue news on their own webpages, but I'd like to see this kind of info all in one place. Because this would be an e-newspaper NOT done by professional journalists, I'm thinking of calling it The Southern Citizen Journal. In addition to contributing stories and articles, would any of you help me with the planning and launch of this thing? Is this a good idea or not? What would you like to see in such a publication? What's wrong with what's available now that we might do differently? Any pitfalls y'all can think of? I'm just sick of getting news about the South from the AP, Gannett, Knight-Ridder, Reuters, and leftist papers like The State. When some liberal newspaper reports there were 75 flag supporters at some event, and you were there and you KNOW there were 300, I want to get that word out! I guess we could now and then run a reprint of a previously published article (with proper permission) but the emphasis is on original works. I'd like this publication to be suitable for introducing proSouthernism to likeminded but unawakened Southerners -- let THEM see what the media isn't telling them -- as well as for us. |
DPers Response Overwhelmingly Positive
Here's just a few I would be more than happy to help any way I can. I was the associate editor of my high school paper, and managering editor of my college paper. I also took 4 courses in journalistic writing in college. Why? I have figured that one out yet, but when I do, I'll let everyone know. =) Again, anyway or anything I can do, please let me know. |
How about it, folks?
